Republic Act No. 6406, entitled “An Act Dividing the Province of Lanao del Sur into the Provinces of Maranaw and Lanao del Sur,” enacted on October 4, 1971.
Section 1 specifies that Maranaw will consist of the municipalities of Masiu, Poona-Bayabao, Lumba-Bayabao, Wao, Tamparan, Marantao, Kapai, Bubong, Ramain-Ditsaan, Mulondo, Saguiaran, Piagapo, and Taraka; while Lanao del Sur will consist of the remaining listed municipalities: Lumbatan, Butig, Binidayan, Bayang, Tubaran, Tugaya, Pagayawan, Pualas, Balabagan, Mala-bang, Ganassi, Madalum, Madamba, Bacolod Grande, and Balindong.

The capital of Maranaw is the City of Marawi, and the capital of Lanao del Sur is the Municipality of Malabang.
Upon the election and qualification of their first elective provincial officials, elected in a special election simultaneously with the general elections of November 1973.
The special election must be held simultaneously with the general elections of November 1973, so it occurs during that general election period.
Section 5 provides that the provincial board of canvassers of the present Province of Lanao del Sur shall act as the provincial board of canvassers for the provinces created.
Section 6 states that the City of Marawi shall be included in the Province of Maranaw.
Section 7 directs that funds, obligations, and assets subsisting at effectivity shall be divided and distributed in proportion to the total income of the municipalities comprising each province for fiscal years 1972 and 1973.
If the obligation was contracted to finance a project located in one of the two new provinces, that province shall be responsible exclusively for such obligation.
Section 8 provides that employees of the former Province of Lanao del Sur whose salaries are paid out of provincial funds shall pertain to either province according to the municipality wherein they are registered voters and actually voted in the general elections of 1969; otherwise, they shall pertain to the Province of Lanao del Sur.
It is the reference point for actual voting and registration location used to assign provincial employees to either Maranaw or Lanao del Sur.
Except as otherwise provided, all provisions of the law now or hereafter applicable to regular provinces shall apply to the Provinces of Maranaw and Lanao del Sur.
Section 9 states that the Act shall take effect immediately upon its approval (approved October 4, 1971).
