Existing Movie Classification Categories
- The MTRCB will maintain the five existing classification categories:
- General Patronage (G)
- Parental Guidance 7 (PG-7)
- Parental Guidance 13 or 15 (PG-13/PG-15)
- For Adults Only (AO)
- X - Disapproved (banned films)
Nature of the Classification System Under Consideration
- The focus is on defining clear descriptions and explanations of each existing category.
- The intention is not to add or remove categories but to clarify their meaning and application.
Procedural Framework for Development
- The MTRCB plans to have consultations with stakeholders, including producers, distributors, and directors.
- These consultations aim to finalize the descriptions of classifications within approximately one month or less.
Legal Authority and Formal Adoption
- The memorandum circular was formally adopted on July 20, 1994.
- The Chairman of MTRCB at the time, Atty. Henrietta S. Mendez, authorized the guidelines.
Important Legal Concepts
- The classification categories serve as regulatory tools to guide the audience on the suitability of film content.
- The 'X - Disapproved' category signifies prohibition of films unsuitable for public exhibition.
- Collaborative development emphasizes industry involvement, promoting mutually agreed standards and transparency in classification.
