Definitions
- Bread: Baked product from leavened or unleavened dough made of ground grains or other edible farinaceous substances mixed with water with or without additives.
- Loaf Bread: Bread baked in a rectangular pan, with or without cover, commonly used for toasts or sandwiches.
- Bun: Generally refers to small bread either sweet or plain; these guidelines cover hamburger buns and hot dog buns specifically.
Labeling Requirements
- All covered bakery products must clearly and prominently display a "Consume before" date.
- The consume before date must be set three (3) days after the date of manufacture.
Compliance Deadline
- Full compliance with the open-date marking regulation was required starting November 1, 1982.

- The guidelines were promulgated under the authority of the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
- The regulations were signed by key officials, including the Acting Administrator of BFAD, the Minister of Health, and later re-issued by the Director and Assistant Secretary for Standards and Regulation.
