Change of Chief of Staff in Army, 1938

The President issues Executive Order No. 179 under authority contained in Section 22 of Commonwealth Act No. 312.
Commonwealth Act No. 312 is the National Defense Act, as amended by Commonwealth Act No. 312.
The designated successor assumes duties prescribed for the office under the National Defense Act and other pertinent executive orders.

Major General Paulino Santos (Regular Force) is relieved as Chief of Staff at the close of December 31, 1938.
Major General Paulino Santos (Regular Force) is retired from active service as of December 31, 1938.
Major General Basilio J. Valdes (Regular Force), who is the Deputy Chief of Staff, is designated Chief of Staff Vice Major General Paulino Santos.
Major General Basilio J. Valdes assumes the duties prescribed for the Chief of Staff office effective January 1, 1939.

The Order is signed by Manuel L. Quezon, President of the Philippines.
The Order is countersigned by Jorge B. Vargas, Secretary to the President.
