Role of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT)

Context and Data on Human Trafficking
- The 2020 United Nations Global Report on Trafficking highlights 49,032 victims in 148 countries.
- Philippines has recorded 1,608 trafficking convictions as of March 2021.
- The country, as signatory to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its Protocol on Trafficking, observes the World Day Against Trafficking every July 30.
Declaration of National Awareness Month
- July of every year is declared as the "National Anti-Trafficking in Persons Awareness Month" to strengthen public awareness and mobilize advocates.
- IACAT is tasked to lead observance and implementation of this month-long campaign.
Funding and Implementation
- Initial implementation funding shall come from available IACAT appropriations.
- Future funding will be subject to the regular government budgeting process.
Participation and Support
- All government agencies, including government-owned/controlled corporations and academic institutions, are enjoined to support the campaign.
- Local government units, private sector, NGOs, and civil society groups are encouraged to actively participate and assist IACAT for effective implementation.
