Creation and Composition of the Jose Rizal National Centennial Commission
- Created by Executive Order No. 52 dated August 10, 1954
- Comprises fifteen members:
- Secretary of Education (Chairman)
- Secretary of Finance (Co-Vice Chairman)
- Supreme Commander of the Order of the Knights of Rizal (Co-Vice Chairman)
- Chairman of Senate Committee on Education
- Chairman of House Committee on Education
- President of the University of the Philippines
- Chairman of UNESCO National Commission
- Director of Public Libraries and Chairman of the Philippine Historical Committee
- Director of Public Schools
- Director of Private Schools
- Five additional members chosen from cultural, educational, and civic organizations
Duties and Functions of the Commission
- Prepare and submit the general program of the Rizal Centennial to the President for approval
- Promote and organize commemorative celebrations nationwide and in Filipino communities abroad
- Edit and publish Jose Rizal's works, plus relevant works to enhance understanding of his life and labors
- Erect a grand monument in Rizal’s honor in the Philippine capital
- Organize an International Congress in the capital inviting foreign individuals known for their appreciation of Rizal and his works
- Arrange issuance of commemorative Centennial stamps
- Create and award Jose Rizal medals to persons and juridical entities contributing to the understanding and propagation of Rizal’s teachings
- Administer all funds donated by the government and public for Centennial purposes
- Undertake all necessary measures to ensure successful execution of all programs and activities related to the Centennial celebration
Reporting and Transparency
- The Commission must report its activities and functions to the President at least once every six months
- The President is tasked to publish such reports for public information and guidance
Legal Authority and Effectivity
- Executive Order issued by President Ramon Magsaysay under powers vested by law
- Effective upon issuance, specifically aimed to ensure proper observance of Rizal’s birth centenary in 1961
