Annual Testing Requirements

  • Testing must be performed annually.
  • Use of suitable test equipment capable of conducting all relevant measurements is mandatory.

Examination Procedures

  • Check the position and mounting for ensuring float-free operation.
  • Visual inspection of the EPIRB for physical defects.
  • Perform the EPIRB self-test routine.
  • Verify the EPIRB identification (ID) is clearly marked externally.
  • Decode the EPIRB identity number and other information from the transmitted signal.
  • Check the battery’s expiry date.
  • If applicable, check the hydrostatic release device and its expiry date.
  • Check the frequency of the 406 MHz signal without transmitting an actual distress call.
  • If possible, check the frequency of the 121.5 MHz homing signal without activating the satellite system.
  • Ensure the EPIRB has been maintained by an approved testing or servicing station.
  • After testing, remount the EPIRB in its bracket and ensure no transmissions have been initiated accidentally.

Reporting and Compliance

  • A written report of the annual test must be submitted to the NTC, Radio Regulation and Licensing Department.
  • Submission deadline is within ten (10) days after completion of the annual testing.

Effectivity and Supersession

  • The guidelines take effect immediately upon issuance.
  • Supersedes all prior circulars, orders, or instructions inconsistent with these provisions.
