Specific Requirements for Certain Courses

Required Content in Spanish Instruction

  • Instruction must include original Spanish texts such as:
    • Mabini's Memorias de la Revolucion Filipina.
    • A compilation of significant speeches from the First Philippine Republic Congress.
    • A compilation of patriotic and nationalistic poems by notable Filipino poets including Jose Rizal, Cecilio Apostol, Fernando Ma. Guerrero, Jose Palma, Claro M. Recto, Jesus Balmori, Manuel Bernabe, Flavio Zaragoza Cano, Pacifico Victoriano, and others.
  • The compilation of poems and speeches is to be prepared by:
    • The Secretary of Education.
    • The head of the Spanish department at the University of the Philippines.
    • The head of the Spanish department at a selected private university, appointed by the Secretary of Education.

Exemption for Students with Prior Foreign Language Units

  • Students who have previously earned credits in other foreign languages before the enactment of this law are exempt from the Spanish requirement.
  • These students may continue studying their chosen foreign languages until their existing requirements are satisfied.

Optional Status of Spanish for Foreign Students

  • Spanish language instruction is not mandatory for foreign students and is offered as an optional subject.

Effectivity

  • The provisions of this Act became effective starting the school year 1957-1958.
