Appointment Duration and Renewal
- Initial appointment period is one year.
- Appointments are renewable annually at the discretion of the Secretary of Health or Secretary of National Defense.
- Total allowed duration varies by medical specialty:
- Up to five years for orthopedic surgery.
- Up to four years for general surgery and general medicine.
- Up to three years for obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics, pathology, and ophthalmology/otorhinolaryngology.
- Up to two years for radiology and anesthesiology.
Computation of Residency Period
- Time previously served as a resident in any clinical department or section of any government training hospital counts toward the maximum residency period.
- This ensures no extension beyond the total allowed duration across multiple departments or hospitals.
Reappointment Provisions
- Residents may be reappointed only to complete unexpired terms.
- Reappointments must conform to the total term limits specified.
Effective Date
- The Act became effective immediately upon approval on June 18, 1959.
