Republic Act 9271 is known as the Quarantine Act of 2004.
The primary objective is to ensure maximum security against the international spread of diseases with minimum interference to world trade and travel.
These Rules apply to all conveyances, their crew or passengers, and/or cargoes arriving or departing at points of entry within the territory of the Philippines.
It seeks to align with the International Health Regulations (IHR), particularly the 2005 updated version adopted by the World Health Assembly.
Strategies include conducting surveillance and infection control, technical assistance and supervision on health and sanitation programs, medical examination of aliens for immigration, vaccination requirements for international travel, and maintenance of sanitary environment in ports and airports.
At least fifty percent (50%) of the income generated can be used to support various Quarantine operations.
The Bureau is mandated to provide stiffer penalties for violations to prevent breaches in public health security as provided in the Implementing Rules and Regulations.
The Bureau conducts medical examinations of aliens/foreigners for immigration purposes and provides vaccination requirements for international travel.
The Order took effect fifteen (15) days following its publication in a newspaper of general circulation after December 5, 2012.
