Jose Abad Santos was the Chief Justice of the Philippines who was executed by the Japanese military in May 1942 due to his unwavering resistance against enemy aggression and occupation. He is commemorated for his integrity, patriotism, self-sacrifice, and loyalty to human dignity and freedom.
The fifteenth of May of each year has been declared as Jose Abad Santos Day.
All schools (public and private), religious institutions, civic organizations, city, provincial, and municipal communities, and individual citizens are enjoined to observe Jose Abad Santos Day.
Appropriate ceremonies designed to highlight the life and exemplary service of Jose Abad Santos to inspire present and future generations are encouraged.
Jose Abad Santos is recognized for his personal integrity, rectitude, patriotism, self-sacrifice, and loyalty to human dignity and freedom.
The intended impact is to imbue the youth with the ideals for which Jose Abad Santos lived and died and to inspire them to follow his example of loyal and patriotic service to the country and humanity.
The proclamation does not specify any penalties for non-compliance or failure to observe Jose Abad Santos Day.
