Decision Date
Aug 11, 2009
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has initiated escort operations to protect ships from piracy in the Gulf of Aden and off the Coast of Somalia, requiring shipping companies to pre-register with Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and inform MARINA upon registration.

Q&A (MARINA ADVISORY NO. 2009-23)

The primary purpose of the MSDF escort operation is to protect ships, regardless of their nationalities, from acts of piracy in the Gulf of Aden and waters off the Coast of Somalia.

The MSDF began its escort operations on 13 March 2009.

All concerned persons, shipping companies, ship operators, and ship managers who are interested in applying for escort to protect their ships from possible piracy attacks should pre-register.

Pre-registration requires providing necessary information or details of the ship which needs to be escorted.

The pre-registration form can be downloaded from the MLIT website at http://www.mlit.go.jp/maritime/gaikoh/pirate/index.html.

The filled pre-registration form must be sent to the MLIT Anti-Piracy Contact and Coordination Office via the e-mail address INFO-PIRACY@mlit.go.jp.

They are required to inform the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in writing immediately after pre-registering with MLIT.

Maria Elena H. Bautista is the administrator who adopted the advisory.

The MSDF escort operation covers the Gulf of Aden and waters off the Coast of Somalia.
