August 5, 2010, was declared as a special (non-working) day in the whole Samar Island to commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of the late Jose Avelino.
Jose Avelino was a former Senate President and was known as the Father of the Philippine Workmen's Compensation Law.
The declaration was made by the Executive Secretary, Paquito N. Ochoa, Jr., by authority of President Benigno S. Aquino III.
