Q&A (EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 263)

Executive Order No. 134 proclaimed Tagalog as the basis of the national language of the Philippines and decreed that the order would take effect two years from its promulgation.

The Institute of National Language is tasked to prepare a dictionary and a grammar of the national language upon the proclamation of the national language by the President.

The dictionary and grammar must be published not later than two years after the proclamation of the national language by the President.

The Institute has prepared a Tagalog-English Vocabulary and a grammar entitled 'Ang Balarila ng Wikang Pambansa'.

The national language began to be taught starting on the nineteenth day of June, 1940.

The Secretary of Public Instruction acts with the approval of the President of the Philippines to prepare necessary rules and regulations.

Section 3 of Article XIII of the Constitution mandates the adoption of a common national language based on one of the existing native languages.

The preparation and completion of the Tagalog-English Vocabulary and the grammar constituted the fulfillment of the Institute's main duties, so further sessions were not necessary unless directed otherwise by the President.

Manuel L. Quezon signed the order as President.
