The primary purpose is to define the metric system and its units, provide for its implementation, and enforce its exclusive use in the Philippines starting January 1, 1983.

The exclusive use of the metric system in the Philippines commenced on January 1, 1983.

It refers to the International System of Units (SI), as established by the General Conference of Weights and Measures and modified by the Metric System Board to suit Philippine conditions.

The Metric System Board is responsible for the implementation, including rules, regulations, conversion tables, metrication programs, and enforcement.

Length is measured by the metre, mass by the kilogram, and time by the second.

Violators may be fined up to One Thousand Pesos, or imprisoned for up to one year, or both. If the violator is a juridical person, responsible officers are liable. Alien offenders are to be deported after serving their sentence.

It is tasked with establishing and maintaining national standards for the base units, with the concurrence of the Metric System Board.

The radian for plane angle and the steradian for solid angle are defined as supplementary units.

Any provision inconsistent with this law is repealed or modified accordingly as per the repealing clause of the Act.

National Metrication Month is observed every November until 1983, to enhance awareness and facilitate adjustment to the metric system.
